Winter Graves, formed in Dawson City, Yukon, put out Under The Mikwam this April on Vancouver-based Neon Taste Records.
The new record draws on the band’s surroundings. Members describe themselves as living ‘in the remote woods of the Yukon territories and northern Manitoba treaty,’ which the music reflects. The sound is black metal threaded with crust-punk overtones.
The album’s title borrows from Ojibwe: mikwam (na), meaning “ice,” as documented in the Ojibwe People’s Dictionary.
“Within our never-ending cycle, the austerity of Winter holds the most significant reality. Life, death, and survival are a constant,” reads the group’s Bandcamp description.
Winter Graves have been active since 2021. They are members of the Manidoo Gathering, an underground music collective. Their discography currently consists of an EP, a demo, a split, and now an LP.
