Spell drops fifth album

Wretched Heart LP by Vancouver-based gothic heavy metal band Spell was released on May 1 via Bad Omen Records. Here, the musicians purposefully reshape the genre’s image.

The band does not shy away from its eccentricity, while also being emotionally direct. Those not afraid “to lay it all out in the open and feel something real” will find the music appealing, Cam Mesmer, Spell’s vocalist and bassist, says.

Wretched Heart, in all its gory glory, embodies a very vital paradox – a record made by true believers who yearn for catharsis beyond. The oxymoron of anthems forged from steel, yet with a very human heart. Even the most cynical bystander will likely struggle not to be bewitched,” reads the album’s official description.

The 10-track LP was recorded between March and October 2025 and produced by Felix Fung, while Greg Mindorff from Suite Sound Labs mastered the album.

The band is currently supporting the release with a run of live shows across Canada. The next one is on May 30 at Vancouver’s Green Auto.
