Today, 6 June, Vancouver Island death metallers YEGG released their debut full-length Rotten. Recorded live with no drum editing, minimal overdubbing of some second-guitar parts and vocals, it captures the band’s energy with an artist-first approach.
The LP was recorded over three days at Rain City Recorders, co-produced by guitarist Kyden McCormick and Matt Roach, with the band keeping their focus on performance mood rather than technical perfectionism.
“From day one, we wanted to have the most human performance possible so that we could really showcase what we’re capable of as a live band, so doing it this way was basically non-negotiable for us at this point. We didn’t have the desire to make something polished and without nuance. A lot of metal these days is about perfection. We’re about regression,” says McCormick.
While the band labels itself as ‘regressive death metal’, their debut is a love letter to death metal in general, McCormick says. Although YEGG follow their own songwriting instincts, they made sure that the influence of the genre’s defining acts, like Obituary, Morbid Angel, and Cannibal Corpse, is also heard on the release.
The album’s artwork by Frank Walls embodies the record’s atmosphere, drawn from its mood and OSDM vibe through close artist-music interplay.
YEGG is a death metal band from Nanaimo, British Columbia, formed in 2023.
